✨What made you decide cosmetology & go to IIC?

I didn’t grow up knowing I wanted to do hair. It wasn’t something that was even a blip in my radar. I was originally a stay at home mom and when ready to join the workforce decided to become a school bus driver. I knew right away, that the job was not for me. During my time there I was looking for some other opportunities and saw that the salon I was going to was looking for a receptionist. My boss, the owner, took a chance on me even though she didn’t like hiring clients. I learned pretty quickly and even started washing clients out on occasion. The more I sat and listened, the more I became interested in the industry. She noticed and encouraged me to go to school and I haven’t regretted it once. Her daughter went to IIC and told me how good the school was. I researched many schools in the area and came to find that this was the best by far. I signed up soon after and haven’t looked back.

✨My Ah Hah moments in school were (Times you realized this is what you should be doing)?

My aha moment was realizing how comfortable I was with everything. Not one part of it made me want to quit, even the perming and roller sets lol. I obviously knew how to do my hair and my daughter‘s hair, but seeing a different side of the hair industry was very eye-opening.

✨Where do you see yourself when you finish school?

I actually work at a salon currently as a receptionist and have already talked to my boss about working there, so that’s already in the books. But in the future, I would like to eventually be my own boss and be able to have the flexibility to spend time with my family while still doing something I love.

✨What advice would you give someone looking into Cosmetology school?

My advice would be do your research to make sure this is something you really want to do and if it is show up and do your best. Never give up when you’re in the thick of it. You will come across things that will frustrate you and maybe even make you angry, but you can’t let those things influence you. Show up to school, do the work and listen to what the teachers tell you.

✨What made you decide cosmetology & go to IIC?

I always wanted to do hair but I felt like the right thing to do was go to college. I applied after college and got in, but then I started second guessing and thought I should get a “real” job instead. So I did that, and I ended up mentally in one of the lowest points in my life. But that low point gave me the ability to stop overthinking everything and just do it, and it was the best decision for me! I knew I wanted to go to IIC ( International Institute of Cosmetology ) because I really wanted to learn and truly understand all hair textures and types to be a multifaceted stylist.

✨My Ah Hah moments in school were (times you realized this is what you should be doing)?

I haven’t had a real big Ah Hah moment, I would say a lot of smaller moments put together and the overall feeling I have at school everyday reinforced the idea to me that this is what I am supposed to be doing.

✨Where do you see yourself when you finish school?

After school I will most likely take an assisting position so I can continue to build my knowledge, when I feel I’m ready I would like to branch out and get a suite of my own one day.

✨What advice would you give someone looking into Cosmetology school?

My advice to anyone looking to go to cosmetology school is to keep an open mind, you might think you are going to hate doing a service and it might actually end up being your favorite service to do. Overall, it has been one of the most rewarding processes and cosmetology is a REAL job, don’t let anyone tell you different. I’m forever grateful for the confidence my classmates and teachers instilled into me, it changed my life for the better.
