How to Become a Licensed Cosmetologist in Connecticut: A Step-by-Step Guide

Thinking about turning your interest in hair into a career? If you have been searching for how to get a cosmetology license in Connecticut, the process may be more straightforward than you expect. You will need qualifying education or an approved apprenticeship, a passing licensing examination, and an application to the state. Here is what to know before you begin.

1. Is Hairdressing the Same as Cosmetology in Connecticut?

Yes! In Connecticut, hairdressing and cosmetology refer to the same licensed profession. The state officially issues a Hairdresser and Cosmetician license, rather than separate licenses for hairdressers and cosmetologists.

Whether you want to become a hairstylist, hairdresser, or cosmetologist, the licensing requirements and authorized scope of practice are the same. This includes professional services such as haircutting, coloring, styling, chemical treatments, and other services permitted under Connecticut law.

At International Institute of Cosmetology, our 1,500-hour Hairdressing/Cosmetology Program prepares students to meet Connecticut’s educational requirements for this license.

2. Understand Connecticut’s Cosmetology License Requirements

Connecticut licenses hairdressers and cosmeticians through its Department of Public Health (DPH). For the school-based route, the state requires at least 1,500 hours of training at an appropriately approved school, and passing of State Board Examination. The state also recognizes a qualifying Connecticut Department of Labor apprenticeship route.

These are state licensing requirements, not necessarily a school’s admissions requirements. Individual schools may require a high school diploma, GED, or acceptable homeschool completion documentation for enrollment. Before applying, check the admissions requirements for your chosen program.

The official Connecticut DPH licensing page explains the current requirements and documentation.

2. Choose a 1,500-Hour Cosmetology Program

Your training should do more than prepare you to take an exam. It should help you develop practical skills, safe work habits, and confidence working with clients.

At International Institute of Cosmetology (IIC), our 1,500-hour Cosmetology/Hairdressing Program covers cutting, coloring, chemical services, styling, hair extensions, braiding, and foundational nail, skin, and makeup topics. There are also many certifications that a student can typically receive included in the tuition price, such as: Wella Color Certification, Redken Color Certification, Babe Hair Extension Certification, Sensory Safe Certification and more. Students explore modern techniques such as balayage and lived-in color while learning sanitation, client communication, and focus on business skills.

Learn about the curriculum, training options, and professional kit on our Cosmetology Program page.

3. Complete Your Training and Prepare for the Licensing Examination

After completing the required training, you will need to satisfy the state’s examination and application requirements. Connecticut DPH currently requires successful completion of the Prometric licensing examination. The school submits an Affidavit of Hours directly to DPH, and examination scores must also be sent directly to the department.

DPH accepts license applications online and lists an initial application fee of $100. Review the state’s instructions before applying because forms, fees, and testing procedures can change.

Completing cosmetology school does not automatically grant a license. Graduation is an important milestone, but you must still meet the state’s licensing requirements.

4. How Long Does Cosmetology School Take in Connecticut?

The state measures cosmetology education in hours, not a fixed number of months. How quickly you finish depends on your schedule, attendance, and progress through the required 1,500 hours.

IIC’s full-time Cosmetology Program can be completed in as little as one year. We offer four-day class schedules at our Wethersfield and Plainville campuses, with start dates that vary by location. Because dates and available seats can change, check the current program page or ask admissions for the next opening.

If you are balancing school with work or family responsibilities, compare actual class days, attendance expectations, and commute times before choosing a location.

5. Plan for Tuition, Supplies, and Financial Aid

Before enrolling, ask for the total program cost—not just tuition. A useful comparison includes registration fees, tuition, lab fees, student kits, and any other required expenses. You should also ask what tools you keep after graduation and which certifications are included in the program.

Att International Institute of Cosmetology, cosmetology students receive a custom professional kit featuring more than 75 tools and supplies, including 13 practice mannequins, professional shears, and a Babe Hair Extensions kit.

Eligible students in IIC’s Cosmetology Program may qualify for federal financial aid. Eligibility depends on the student and program, and aid is not available for every IIC offering. Our financial aid team can explain options and help you understand the application process.

6. Visit a Campus and Picture Your Next Step

IIC offers Cosmetology training at our Wethersfield, CT campus, 632 Silas Deane Highway, and at 65 Whiting Street in Plainville, CT. Book a Tour.

Our separate wellness training facility at 657 Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield, CT houses programs such as Esthetics, Nail Technician, Eyelash Technician, and Makeup Artistry; it is not the primary Cosmetology training location.

A campus tour lets you see the learning environment, meet our team, and ask about schedules, costs, training, and career preparation.
